Font Design

I want to choose a font that will attract and appeal to my target audience, whilst also maintaining a easy to read and professional look, therefore I compared the different fonts ‘Calibri’, ‘Impact 32’ and ‘Harlow Solid Italic’ because they are completely different types of fonts; ‘Impact’ being a typical sans serif font, ‘Harlow’ being a typical serif font and ‘Calibri’ is simply just the in-between of the two.
In my opinion I think that ‘Calibri’ will be a good font choice for the general text throughout the contents page and front cover because it is clear and easy to read but also has both a professional and serious appearance to it. Moreover the fact that ‘Calibri’ is neither serif nor sans serif makes it appear bold and simple yet sophisticated which I believe are all elements that sixth formers are looking for within a font type for an informative magazine.
In addition I will be using the font at size 14 using the bold tool in order to enhance the thickness and visibility of the individual lettering, I believe that this will further the sophistication and professionalism of both my front cover and contents page whilst also making it easier to read. Finally I will be using a wide variety of different colours throughout both my contents page and front cover therefore I intend to use colours for my font that will look professional and that contrast with backgrounds in order to make them stand out and easy to read.
Moreover I will not be using ‘Harlow solid italic’ on my contents page or front cover because in my opinion it is far to serif for my target audience and they could find it daunting, this would be a repellent for most sixth formers and therefore discourage them to read the magazine due to it ineffective choice of font.
In addition to this i think that 'Impact 32' will be a good font choice for the titles of both my contents page and front cover and for the titles of the cover lines within these pages etc. because in my opinion I think that the fact that it is sans serif makes it clear and easy to read and also makes the text stand out, these are the key aspects that are required of a title if it is intended to look professional and sophisticated. I also want to catch the eye of my target audience in order to entice them to read the magazine, therefore using a strong, bold text type will make my magazine whilst also having connotations of seriousness and intelligence.
This page shows the different font types that i may apply to my final front cover design, why and where i would use them on my design and the pro's and cons of each etc.
